Book Haul – 1 February 2014

Showcase Sunday banner

Showcase Sunday is a meme hosted by Vicky over at the Book, Biscuits and Tea blog to let readers know what book related items have come our way.

Letterbox Love is a meme hosted by Lynsey over at Narratively Speaking and this meme has a British feel to it.

I’ve opted to use the logo designed by Faye over at A Daydreamer’s Thoughts rather than the “official” one because I’m a sucker for old fashioned red postboxes.

STSmall

The Stacking The Shelves meme hosted by Tynga at Tynga’s Reviews to promote the books that we’re adding to our shelves.

Finally, the Bought, Borrowed & Bagged meme hosted by Cimarron and Braine over at the Talk Supe blog.

Hello lovely readers.  I hope that you’re having a great weekend.

So, I’ve had a wee break from the book hauls for a couple of weeks.  This was simply a logistics thing because I need to keep a little bit of money saved for my weekend away next week.  Anyway, I’m back and I have a handful of books on offer that I hope that there’s something to interest you.

Backward Compatible: A Geek Love Story

“Backward Compatible” by Sarah Daltry & Pete Clark

I spotted this book a couple of weeks ago on a haul post and I put it straight on to my Wish List.  What can I say?  I’m open about my geekery.

The blurb on Goodreads likens this book to “Scott Pilgrim” and “Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist”.  Although I haven’t read the books, I have seen, and enjoyed, the films.  At the time of writing, I’m just over half way through this book and it has moments of chuckle style humour, moments of laugh out loud humour, a dash of teen gross-out humour and a good dollop of romance.

Call the Midwife: A True Story of the East End in the 1950s

“Call The Midwife” by Jennifer Worth

This is a case of television influencing my reading.  I’ve seen this book in bookstores and supermarkets for years, but it’s only since I have made this programme a regular fixture in my Sunday evening viewing that I wanted to get hold of the book.  I appreciate that the “characters” in the series will more than likely be either composites or “made for TV” versions of the people in the book, but the time period does fascinate me.

“Diary Of An Also-Ran 2013” by Geoff Wightman

I found out about this series of books through Athletics Weekly magazine.  Geoff Wightman commentates on road racing and at the Olympic Stadium in London, which I visited last year for the Anniversary Games in London.

As I’m due to go to an athletics event next week, I thought that I’d like to have a look back at last season.

Disneylanders

“Disneylanders: A Novel” by Kate Abbott

Okay, I have an admission to make about this book.  It wasn’t bought as much for the coming of age aspect, but for a rebirth in my love of theme parks.

I will, more than likely, never go to a Disneyland park, but I loved my trip to the Efteling theme park in The Netherlands – I loved it then… And I’d love to go again!!!

And now, for a wee surprise for one of my readers…

Greek Expectations: The Last Moussaka Standing

“Greek Expectations: The Last Moussaka Standing” by Ekaterina Botziou

Yes, Ms Botziou… I mean you.

I found out about Ekaterina when she posted a “like” to one of my posts last month.  I didn’t know she was an author, but I was curious to take a look at her site in return.

Well, to cut a long story short, I visited Ekaterina’s blog and I saw information on “Greek Expectations” which made me think that I should try to give it a go.  (Plus, the weather’s awful so a little sunshine in my reading could go a long way).

READING UPDATE

Well, I’m three stories into “The Great British Sherlock Read Off” after completing “The Sign Of Four” and “A Scandal In Bohemia“.  My thoughts on these two stories can be found through the links.

In addition to this challenge, I have also completed the “Doctor Who” celebrity memories anthology “Behind The Sofa” and Jenny Colgan’s latest entry into the “Doctor Who: Time Trips” range, “Into The Nowhere“.

Finally, I am currently reading “Backward Compatible”, as detailed earlier in this post.

Please feel free to leave your comments and links to your haul posts below.

There won’t be a haul post next week as I’ll be watching athletes running, jumping and throwing in Sheffield for the weekend, but I hope to give you more reading updates between now and my next haul post in a couple of weeks.

  1. Disneylanders sounds like a cool book. I will be checking that out as my fiancée and I are going to the one in LA in June 🙂 Also I like the ‘Call the Midwife’ tv series so I am sure the book will be just as good.

  2. I’ve heard so many great things about Disneylanders. I’m not even sure what it’s about, but I definitely want to read it. Backward Compatible sounds super cute too. I’m gonna have to get a copy of that. Enjoy! (:

  3. Backward Compatible looks great! I love that cover! (Kind of reminds me of Wreck It Ralph. 😉 Happy reading! And thanks for stopping by my blog!

  4. It made me sad to read that you will never get to Disneyland. If that is really a dream for you save save save your money! I didn’t get to Disneyland till I was an adult because my family never had money to go. It was amazing. I also went with my family and we were all adults by this time. It was great!!

    • Thanks for visiting.

The thing that prevents me from going is that I like in the UK and even the one in Paris is pretty expensive.

I’m not sad though because I managed to go to the Efteling theme park and it was fantastic.

However, if a piece of luck heads my way that enables me to go to one of the Disney parks, I’m there!!! 🙂

  5. I totally had never heard about the Disneylanders book before but I NEED that book – will be adding that to my to-buy list. I too would LOVE to go one day!

Hope you have a great weekend next weekend – that sounds fantastic!

Thank you so much for stopping by and hope you have a beautiful Sunday!

    • I only found out about Disneylanders through a haul post myself, so I’m glad to share.

Thanks you for the wishes for next weekend. I’m REALLY looking forward to it as it’s the first time that I’ll be going to an indoor event.

      Have a great weekend. 🙂

    • Thank you. I’m really looking forward to my weekend away – a lovely Christmas present from the folks.

I enjoyed Backward Compatible and I agree that the cover is fantastic.

      Have a great weekend. 🙂

  6. Your haul is very interesting and I love the cover of Call the Midwife. Very curious about Disneylanders, too. Here’s to theme park love! Have a great week. Cheers from Manila, Philippines.

    • I must admit that mind’s dictated by “real life” and that other factor that sits hand in hand with it… available funds to buy books.

I’m actually getting better at it, because I wait a wee while and then bargain hunt for books on the Kindle. Yes, it inevitably puts me behind a lot of people, but it also means that my book buying doesn’t damage my wallet either. 🙂
