Book Haul – 1 February 2014

I’ve opted to use the logo designed by Faye over at A Daydreamer’s Thoughts rather than the “official” one because I’m a sucker for old fashioned red postboxes.

Hello lovely readers.  I hope that you’re having a great weekend.

So, I’ve had a wee break from the book hauls for a couple of weeks.  This was simply a logistics thing because I need to keep a little bit of money saved for my weekend away next week.  Anyway, I’m back and I have a handful of books on offer that I hope that there’s something to interest you.

 

“Backward Compatible” by Sarah Daltry & Pete Clark

I spotted this book a couple of weeks ago on a haul post and I put it straight on to my Wish List.  What can I say?  I’m open about my geekery.

The blurb on Goodreads likens this book to “Scott Pilgrim” and “Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist”.  Although I haven’t read the books, I have seen, and enjoyed, the films.  At the time of writing, I’m just over half way through this book and it has moments of chuckle style humour, moments of laugh out loud humour, a dash of teen gross-out humour and a good dollop of romance.

 

“Call The Midwife” by Jennifer Worth

This is a case of television influencing my reading.  I’ve seen this book in bookstores and supermarkets for years, but it’s only since I have made this programme a regular fixture in my Sunday evening viewing that I wanted to get hold of the book.  I appreciate that the “characters” in the series will more than likely be either composites or “made for TV” versions of the people in the book, but the time period does fascinate me.

 

“Diary Of An Also-Ran 2013” by Geoff Wightman

I found out about this series of books through Athletics Weekly magazine.  Geoff Wightman commentates on road racing and at the Olympic Stadium in London, which I visited last year for the Anniversary Games in London.

As I’m due to go to an athletics event next week, I thought that I’d like to have a look back at last season.

 

“Disneylanders: A Novel” by Kate Abbott

Okay, I have an admission to make about this book.  It wasn’t bought as much for the coming of age aspect, but for a rebirth in my love of theme parks.

I will, more than likely, never go to a Disneyland park, but I loved my trip to the Efteling theme park in The Netherlands – I loved it then… And I’d love to go again!!!

“Greek Expectations: The Last Moussaka Standing” by Ekaterina Botziou

Yes, Ms Botziou… I mean you.

I found out about Ekaterina when she posted a “like” to one of my posts last month.  I didn’t know she was an author, but I was curious to take a look at her site in return.

Well, to cut a long story short, I visited Ekaterina’s blog and I saw information on “Greek Expectations” which made me think that I should try to give it a go.  (Plus, the weather’s awful so a little sunshine in my reading could go a long way).

 

READING UPDATE

Well, I’m three stories into “The Great British Sherlock Read Off” after completing “The Sign Of Four” and “A Scandal In Bohemia“.  My thoughts on these two stories can be found through the links.

In addition to this challenge, I have also completed the “Doctor Who” celebrity memories anthology “Behind The Sofa” and Jenny Colgan’s latest entry into the “Doctor Who: Time Trips” range, “Into The Nowhere“.

Finally, I am currently reading “Backward Compatible”, as detailed earlier in this post.
